From downloading and installing to privacy settings, quickly understand Potato’s core functions and common operations.
Potato Basics
What is Potato?
Potato is an instant messaging app that focuses on speed and security. You can send messages, photos, videos, and files, and stay connected with friends, teams, and communities using groups, channels, cloud sync, and more.
What devices does Potato support?
Potato supports Android, iPhone, Windows, macOS, and Linux. After logging in with the same mobile phone number, normal cloud chats can be synchronized across logged-in devices.
What can Potato send?
In addition to text messages, you can also send pictures, videos, voices, stickers, locations, contacts, and files in common formats. Please choose an appropriate file size based on network conditions and recipient equipment.
How to create a new chat?
Select a contact in the client's contacts or create a new message portal to start a private chat; you can also create a group and invite members to start a multi-person conversation.
Download and install
Where to download the Potato client?
Please go to Software download page, select the platform that corresponds to your system. We provide separate download pages and installation tips for Windows, macOS, Android, iPhone, and Linux.
What should I do if Android cannot install APK?
Please confirm that the download is complete and allow your current browser or file manager to install apps from this source in your system settings. The menu names of different brands of devices may be slightly different, and this permission can be turned off again after installation.
What should I do if Windows or macOS cannot start the client?
It is recommended to re-download the complete installation package, confirm that the system version meets the requirements and close the old version before installation. If macOS prompts for source restrictions, please confirm whether to allow the application to be opened in the system "Privacy and Security".
How to keep the client up to date?
It is recommended to obtain updates through the official website or app store. Desktop clients typically check for updates on startup; do not download or install modified versions of the client from unknown sources.
Groups and Channels
What is the maximum number of members a group can have?
Potato supergroups can accommodate up to 200,000 members and are suitable for larger interest communities, project collaboration, and information discussions.
What is the difference between channels and groups?
Channels are suitable for publishing announcements and content to a large number of subscribers, usually spoken by administrators; groups are suitable for interaction, replies, and discussions among members. You can choose to create one of these depending on your communication method.
How do I create a group or channel?
Click on the new portal on the client, select "New Group" or "New Channel", and then fill in the name, avatar, introduction and visibility settings according to the page prompts. Member permissions can be adjusted at any time after creation.
How to manage group members and speaking permissions?
Group owners and moderators can add or remove members, set moderators, and restrict speaking or media sending permissions. For public communities, it is recommended to establish clear community rules in advance and reasonably allocate administrator responsibilities.
Can I set a public link?
Yes. Public groups or channels can be set up with easy-to-remember public links to facilitate users to search or join directly; private groups can be joined through invitation links or administrator invitations.
Privacy and Chat
What is a secret chat?
Secret chats are end-to-end encrypted so only the two parties in the conversation can read the messages. Such chats will only remain on participating devices and will not be synced to new devices as normal cloud chats.
Can I use messages to self-destruct?
Yes. A self-destruct timer can be set in secret chats so that messages will automatically disappear within a specified period of time after being viewed. Please note that content may still be recorded in other ways.
How do I control who can see my phone number and online status?
Please adjust the visible range of mobile phone number, last online time, avatar and forwarded messages in the client "Settings - Privacy and Security". Different versions may have slightly different names.
How do I block or report a harassing account?
Use the blocking function on the profile page of the corresponding chat to stop receiving messages from it. If it involves spam, counterfeiting or illegal content, please also use the reporting portal to submit it to the platform for review.
Accounts and Devices
Can new devices synchronize chat history?
After logging in to a new device using the same account, ordinary cloud chat records will be automatically synchronized. Secret chats only remain on the original participating device and will not appear on new devices.
What should I do if I cannot receive the login verification code?
Please make sure that the country and area code of the mobile phone number are filled in correctly, SMS interception is not turned on, and the network is kept open. If you're signed in on another device, the verification code may be sent to the Potato conversation on that device first.
How do I decommission a device I no longer use?
Go to "Settings - Devices" or "Active Sessions", view the list of currently logged in devices, select a session you don't recognize or no longer use and end it. When an abnormal device is found, please exit immediately and modify the security settings.
How to keep my account after changing my mobile phone number?
Please complete the change in the account or mobile phone number options in the settings when the old mobile phone number is still usable. After verification is completed, contacts, cloud messages, and group relationships will continue to remain under the same account.
How to delete account?
Deleting your account is an irreversible operation and may cause you to lose your cloud data and group management rights. Please back up necessary information before operation and follow the prompts to confirm through the official account management portal.
Security and support
How to protect the security of my account?
Don’t give your login code, password, or recovery information to anyone; turn on two-step verification for your account; regularly check for active sessions, and only use clients provided by the official website or official app store.
What should I do if I find suspicious links or fraudulent information?
Do not click or enter verification codes or payment information. Please block and report the account or group, save screenshots if necessary, and contact local law enforcement or consumer protection agencies.
Why can't I send a message or join a group?
Please check that your network connection, client is up to date, and that the group invitation link is still valid. If the permission restrictions are set by the administrator, please contact the group administrator for confirmation.
How to contact technical support?
Please organize the device system, client version, time of occurrence of the problem and necessary screenshots and send them to support@potato.im. Avoid sending verification codes, passwords, or private chats in emails.
